Animal species affected by wildlife crime
From the report to the verdict
Effectiveness in combating wildlife crime depends on many factors, including the efficiency of law enforcement agencies, the rigour of the law and public awareness.
Observation
Observation
The first important action against wildlife crime is observation and documentation. This can include finding dead animals or observing illegal activities.
Report
Report
Suspicious activities must be reported immediately to the authorities, primarily the police. In addition, please inform the local wildlife crime experts.
Investigation
Investigation
The responsible authorities carry out an investigation of reported cases, including evidence gathering, witness interviews, forensic investigation and co-operation with relevant experts.
Indictment
Indictment
Based on the results of the investigation, public prosecutors decide whether there is sufficient evidence to press charges. If there is sufficient evidence, an official indictment is filed against the suspects.
Legal proceedings
Legal proceedings
The suspects are brought before a court where they can defend themselves. The evidence is presented and the court passes judgment in accordance with the applicable national laws.
Verdict
Verdict
At the end of the trial, the court issues a judgment, which may include acquittal, conviction or other legal consequences, depending on the evidence available and national laws.
Imposition of a sanction
Imposition of a sanction
If guilt is found, sanctions are imposed to punish those responsible and deter them from committing future offenses.
Prevention
Prevention
Prevention is key to avoiding future wildlife crime: stronger monitoring, law enforcement, conflict management and public relations work to protect endangered species.
