In the 2024\/2025 monitoring year, 219 packs, 43 pairs, and 14 territorial individuals were recorded in Germany. In Austria, there are 9 packs.   Wolves live in family groups (packs), which usually consist of a parent pair, the young of the last two years and the pups. Once eradicated by the end of the 19th century, the species has been successfully reintroduced and today numbers nearly 200 individuals in Germany and around 35 in Austria.
